Daliy Mindfulness Workshops and Courses

I gives talks, hold Mindfulness days, Monthly Mindfulness Meetings, teaching MBSR, MSC and other short Mindfulness courses and weekends, including a specific introductory course for those with cancer. MBSR is a part-time 8 week course (see below). I also hold one-to-one sessions.  The teachings and courses are largely experiential using Mindful practices such as: sitting meditation, movement, seeing, hearing, eating, walking, and breathing -  all to develop awareness. Home practice is an integral part of the courses.

Please see the bottom of the page for the details of courses, talks and Mindfulness days over the next few months.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

This course is based on the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction approach developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and his colleagues, over thirty years ago at the Stress Reduction Clinic, Centre for Mindfulness, University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

An MBSR course takes the form of 8 weekly classes, usually one evening a week for 2 and a half hours with an all day session (10 – 4pm) around week 7.

Mindfulness training in the form of MBSR is effective in reducing stress related medical problems, anxiety, panic, depression, insomnia, living with chronic pain, IBS, PTSD, psoriasis, and enhancing the quality of life of patients with chronic illnesses.

‘Over 18,000 medical patients and more than thirty years of experience and scientific studies show that the cultivation of regular and systematic formal and informal meditation practices can make a huge difference in the quality of life of people with a wide range of chronic stress disorders, pain conditions, and outright illness, to say nothing of those suffering from the normal wear and tear of 21st century living’. Jon Kabat-Zinn

A folder and three CD’s of practice meditations (sitting, moving and a body scan) narrated by Barbara accompany the programme, to support the home practice which is integral to the course.
Participants are expected to commit to the whole course. The cost of the course varies depending on the venue and concessions are available (please see current courses page). There is a cancellation policy.  Certificates of attendance can be supplied on request, towards CPD accreditation for 25.5 hours attendance on completion of the course.

During the last session of the course participants write a letter to themselves which I post to them six months later - here is the response from one -  "Thank you for sending the note I wrote to myself at the end of our course last Autumn...it seems longer in some ways than 6 months ago and shorter in other ways.....life! I was pleased to see that I have overall kept up the practice, perhaps not as thoroughly as I might have but on a daily basis it is with me. It has helped considerably with the curve balls that arrive, elderly parents needing more support and ongoing daughter ‘worries’! So.......really just to say a big ‘thank you’. I may well join you again in the future but for the meantime I trust all goes well with you. The Newsletter is always lovely to receive ...another thank you".

Mindful Self Compassion MSC)

This eight week course was created by Dr Christopher Germer and Kristin Neff. MSC combines the skill of mindfulness and self-compassion, providing a poweful tool for emotional resilience. Based on the ground breaking research of Kristin Neff and the clinic expertise of Christopher Germer, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable particpants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindess, care and understanding. Rapidly expanding research demonstrated that self-compassion is strongly associate with emotion wellbeing, less anxiety, depresson and stress. The format is a weekly meeting of 2 and 3/4 hours plus a silent practice session/day just after the mid way thorugh the course. A folder and access to downloadable meditation practices are included. Althogh no previous experience with midfulness of editaion is require to attend MSC it is highly recommended that a meditation practice and /or previous participation in an MBSR training would be desirable.

"Thank you so much for a lovely eight weeks.

It was wonderful to feel the connected presence grow in the group as we all got to know one another better. I didn't want it to end. But life moves on! For me it has beena journey from what was a reasonable level of self knowledge beforehand, to actually appreciating and loving myself as I am.  I think that this new warmth towards myself helps me to be better at extending the same loving kindness to others.  It's the beginning of a journey that I'm sure will enrich the rest of my life". Mindfulness Basics

Mindfulness Basics is a three part course designed by Barbara to introduce the fundamentals of Mindfulness. The course is designed so that we meet over three sessions, for example for three consecutive Tuesday evenings for two hours per session.  This format allows for home practice between session two and three,  bringing the direct experience of Mindfulness into your daily life. The advantage of this format, is this very fact. You will have the opportunity to practice and move from a non practiced position to one of daily practice which is the heart of Mindfulness. The course has most of the basic elements of an MBSR course within it and therefore acts as a good precursor to the 8 week course.

Three Part Introduction to Mindfulness for those with Cancer

This course is also designed to introduce the fundamentals of Mindfulness and is in the same format as Mindfulness Basics.  This allows for the practices to be experieinced in daily life and brings meaning through direct experience rather than merely theory or understanding the concepts.  The course is geared towards those on a cancer journey whether it be their own or for those who are supporting someone with cancer.

"Have just returned from completing your wonderful introductory 3 week course tonight & wished to thank both yourself & Cancerwise for this most valuable & illuminating course !

We look forward to seeing you again in the future & to now incorporating this into our daily lives. With thanks & best wishes, Mark & Angie".

One-to-One Mindfulness sessions.

I also teach Mindfulness on a one-to-one basis from my office near Chichester in West Sussex. I am available for one-to-one sessions on Skype.

"Barbara - with heartfelt thanks......As somebody who has been prone to anxiety from early childhood, the introduction of mindful meditation into my life has been a profound experience.  It has changed the nature of my approach to living beyond measure, impacting upon those around me in so many ways, as I become happier and more positive.  Developing mindfulness through one-to-one teaching  with you, based on the 8 week course has greatly enhanced the learrning experience: for me, training designed to suit my particular circumstance has been and remains a privilege"  David.

One-to-One Counselling sessions.

As a qualified counsellor, I use a combination of Mindfulness and Radical Acceptance as the foundation of my work with counselling clients. If counselling clients wish, I also teach Mindfulness and Self Compassion practices within the session.

Introductory workshops.

For those who would like to get a feel for Mindfulness before committing to an 8 week programme, I hold day workshops or a half days at various venues in the Chichester and Midhurst area of West Sussex and run the three part Mindfulness Basics course.

Mindfulness Days and Monthly Mindfulness Meeetings

These provide a chance for those who have a Mindfulness practice and wish to be led by Barbara and experience Mindfulness within a group setting again. Many of the people who enjoy refreshers like these are those who have already taken an 8 week course or have worked with me before in some way. The Monthly Mindfulness Meetings are also open to those who are new to Mindfulness are are curious.

There are no current courses available at present.
